Cruel crown series order7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() But in 1855, Alfred Russell Wallace published a paper which had claims regarding fossil species that seemed very close to the theories that Darwin was about to propose in On the Origin of Species. One of the reasons the book was so popular was because Darwin wrote it not for scientists, but for general readers. The book was delayed from 1839, and whilst various theories have been put forth for this (including Darwin's fears of religious persecution), it would seem that it was more a case of him wanting to get everything right. ![]() ![]() At the time the book was published, there was already growing support for the concept of evolution, but that also conflicted with the Church which at the time was very intertwined with the scientific establishment in England. Darwin's book, which shows evidence of life arising by common descent, and progressing and evolving over generations through natural selection, became the foundation of evolutionary biology. The full title of the book is 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life'. On the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin was first published in 1859. Corey7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() If you’ve read the last novel though, then you’ll know that a new villain has come onto the scene in the form of the Free Navy, a violent group of rebels fighting in the name of Belters (a term that describes people born in or beyond the Asteroid Belt, a generally exploited and oppressed working class). ![]() This sixth installment of the series is the immediate follow-up to Nemesis Games, directly addressing the events that happened in that book, so I would strongly recommend catching up before reading this review or others to avoid possible spoilers. In fact, I’d argue that after a major plot event, it’s important to dial things back a bit in order to let your characters regroup, refocus, and rebuild (not to mention give time for the reader to digest the latest bombshell) and this is exactly the way I would describe the circumstances surrounding Babylon’s Ashes. And yet, I say this doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. Of course, the one problem with this pattern is that it works much like gravity-what goes up must come down, after all. ![]() The Expanse has become one of my favorite series in recent years, and it is no exaggeration to say that it has only gotten better with every new book. This does not affect the contents of my review and all opinions are my own. I received a review copy from the publisher. Book Review: Babylon’s Ashes by James S.A. If you are looking to read a history textbook of the minutiae of US politics from 1960-63, then by all means read this book- in this regard I cannot fault the historical scholarship. This was not, as I was hoping, an exploration of the life and character of JFK (on a backdrop of historical events) but rather an utterly comprehensive account of his presidency. Under normal circumstances I would have long-ago abandoned a book that was taking me so long to read due to its dryness but wanted to persevere until the end. I wanted to love this book, I really did, but truthfully it did not grip me. Kennedy: His Life by Evan Thomas and absolutely adoring it, the logical next step for me was to pick up this- the definitive biography of John F. In the acknowledgments of this book, the historian writes that “the research and writing of this book extended over five years…”, and it must be noted that this is also the length of time it took me to read it. ![]() Under The Great Elm by Rich Flanders7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() We have a fascination for people who live life on their own terms and Flanders definitely fits that bill hitchhiking all over America doing odd jobs to survive, wandering through Paris on an LSD trip, and selling blood to finance trips through Greece, Turkey, and Israel are just a few of his exploits. ![]() And the charm.Īlthough at times Flanders does come off like one’s daffy uncle spinning yarns for a family trapped at the dinner table, there is enough that’s enchanting about his journey to keep reader’s sitting there to ‘listen’. ![]() So who is Rich Flanders and why should we read his memoir, UNDER THE GREAT ELM? It’s a legitimate question, particularly when his story twists and turns and detours here and there and doesn’t seem to be heading towards any discernible climax– but remarkably, that’s the point. Rich Flanders is not a famous singer, although he’s won awards he’s not a motivational speaker, although he was a very successful salesman and he’s not a spiritual guru, although he probably could gather his own band of disciples by sheer force of personality. ![]() The rising mira grant7/7/2023 ![]() McGuire would be writing an entirely new, totally different series – featuring politics, blogs and zombies – I was ecstatic. ![]() ![]() Why did I read this book: It’s no surprise that I am a fan of Seanan McGuire’s – her October Daye series is one of my current favorites in the Urban Fantasy (sub)genre.
